World Cup has ended and I wonder what everyone is doing now...

I am still in touch with some of the dragonflies especially Pam and Beng Kok (actually, he changed his name to Beng Guan now... email him to find out more... hee). Pam's been busy so we dun get to talk too much too.

I guess that is life. We all become too busy... have you wondered why we are all busy for.

A mother once shared with me. I work so hard i.e. leave home before son wakes up and comes home when son is asleep so that i can provide the best for my son. But she hardly sees the son and even though the school wanted the son to provide a paper file, he was unable to provide as his mother never got round to buying it for him... dun even have time to go shopping to buy things...

Let's revisit the statement... "I want the best for my son". Now, now, what is giving the best for someone? Think abt it.

Sigh...

Dragonflies Met

On a rainy friday, 28th Apr 06, the dragonflies met up to catch up. Well, almost all lah. Except our youngest member who incidentally have not completed her Mod 2. Xiao Mei, pls complete it.

We had a great time catching up and challenging each other forward. It was great to relive the spirit of Whoooooooshhhhhhh! Those who have not been meeting up and want to meet up with others from Whoosh 17... let me know... we will plan something for you all... :) specially from the dragonflies.

I was reminded of these 3 important words while watching TV and seeing the advert on SUMO... its be a motivational speaker... ehhh... what's his name??? anyway, it means, Shut Up, Move on! Have you come across, many people who keeps talking abt the past and never moved on... well, we all are guilty of that some time or other... so I was reminded of the 3 magical words that got us past tough times...

As I am typing this post, I am sending out positive thots to all Whoosh 17 participants, esp asking all of you to read this blog. (I wonder how many people come back here nowadays.. Sara, Meng, Beng Kok, Dragonfly, yooo hooo.... where is everyone?)

Looks like the issue on Tammy is not slowing down or stopping... For those who are still clueless... she from NYP... anyway, it shows us the power of the internet and it shows the new power of the new medias... internet, blogs and mobile phone... the trend? these 3 things are gonna get closer to each other... well, for those who dun know, stuart has a site www.internetmarketingsingapore.com which talks more abt these new mediums. The Tammy from NYP issue highlights the power of this medium vs the traditional newspaper... time frame now has swtich from daily to hourly or even minutely... think abt how that changes the world... audience change from local to international...

ok, since i know many of you travel a far to find Tammy... i shall treat you to a good lesson on husband store. I am sure many of you ladies would love to have such a store... enjoy...

HUSBAND STORE

A store that sells husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband.

Hello guys! Your evil friend here! hahahaha!!! Don't know whether you'll read this in time or not, but I would just like to invite you guys to join me as a coach for the coming whoosh!!!

Failure is an Illusion, Judgement, Opinion

Dear friends,

Let me take this oppurtunity to wish you all an exciting, motivating, joyful and fruitful new year.

Well, I wanted you to share with you all, a few things about this word called - Failure.

In POE, We were told and also were instilled with the following thing:

There is no Failure - it is merely a feedback.

Later on, when I attended the I am gifted programme, I came across this thing:

There is no failure - its just a learning experience

And yesterday while I was surfing, I came across with this flash movie calle "Live your passion" . It was quite inspiring. It suggested the following reframe:

Failure is an Illusion; No one ever fails at anything
Everything we do produces a results - The real question is what we do with that results?

I find these things are quite fascinating. I am sure you all have your thoughts and views. Please share and post them as your comments.

New Year- 2006!

Its a New Year and I am sure most of you are having some form of party or function or church or Mahjong or just chilling out at home. Whatever it is, New Year is a good time, good time to just spend some time with others or yourself.

2005 is a year than Whoosh 17 was born and I am sure till today, many new ties, relationships have been formed just through spending that 8 days together. That 8 days seem simple and not too long nor short but the miracle it creates amongst us cannot be easily quantified or described.

As the new year arrive, I want to wish you all a great 2006 and may the ties formed in 2005 continue to grow stronger and stronger.

11 Dec Dinner...

We met at 7pm for most of us who made it to the party. We waited, enthusiastically chit chating and catching up with old frds. There were abt 9 of us. 25 of us signed up to attend the dinner. Pam asked me earlier if she should book more as Rice Table will be crowded on a Sunday nite. I said, it should be fine.

It was 8pm and no one turned up. We decided to call to ask the rest if they are coming. We called and started crossing out our list: "Oh dear, I forgot abt it", "I din get a comfirmation it is on", "toot toot (engaged tone)" etc. Our hearts drop when we realised that most couldn't make it. We picked ourselves up and decided that its a good start anyway to have a more close knit discussion. We caught up and talked abt politics, the yummy great food (its unbelievable), some of the sbgs that are going on, our lives in general, the bird flu?, etc.

It was great just catching up and remembering old friends... and great food.

For those who missed it, pls dun feel bad. We know such things happen and i understand some were involved in IAG coaching. There will be a next time and make sure you come the next time.

An experience learnt in organising a simple get together, A good meal, Good fellowship and a great discount.

What Perspective would You Choose?

Long long ago in the ancient times, there lived a king who ruled over a large country. Being the ruler of such a large country he was overwhelmed with the various projects and events that were occuring concurrently in his country. It came to a point where he can no longer take it, and he decided to form a counsel of wise man to help lighten his burdern and to provide him with advices.

So the wisest man were gathered from all corners of his country and among them, the wisest was a scholar by the name of Zion. He had a happy disposition and a very positive outlook towards everything in life regardless of how dire the situation was. Because of his counsel, the country thrived and he was also promoted to the position of Grand Advisor, the King's right hand man.

One day the King went out to the forest for a hunting trip. He had a little mishap and as a result the tip of his index finger was sliced off. Feeling fustrated and in pain, he summoned Zion to complain about how hapless he was.

After listening to the King's complaint, Zion replied with a smile," My King, all things in this world happened for a reason and I'm sure this is a belssing in disguised. So instead of frowning why not choose to smile? "

The King was infurated by what Zion said and ordered him to be incarcerated immediately.

A few days passed and the King forget about that incident and so was Zion too.

Months later, the king went out for a hunting trip again. Unfortunately this time his entourage was attacked and captured by a wild tribe. And it is the custom of the tribe to offer the leader of their captured group to their Gods as a form of respect. So the King was tied to the platform and preparations were made to burn him alive.

The rituals began admist dancing tribesman and chanting. Suddenly the witch gave a loud shreak and ordered the King to be removed from the platform as she realised that one of the King's index finger had been sliced off and in their custom it is an insult to Gods to offer them incomplete offerings.

So the King was realeased and was replaced by his followers. After trudging for few hours the King returned to his country. He was immediately reminded of his Grand Advisor Zion whom he had imprisoned not long ago. It was then that he realised that what Zion said then made sense and so he immeditately summoned Zion to him.

The King said apologetically," Zion I can finally understand and appreciate what you said to me during our last hunting trip so please forgive me for doing things in the spur of the moment."

Zion replied with a smile," My dear majesty I should be the one who should thank you for if you haven't imprisoned me that day, guess who would be sacrificed as an offerring on the platform today? "

So as you can see from this anecdote, there are always 2 perspectives on things that you can choose to see it from. The positive or the negative. So what would you choose?

Three words

Hello Everyone!

First of all let me dedicate a flower for all of the friends of whoosh17 as well the visitors of this blog :) I know it has been a while since I posted here. Now, I just wanted to recall the three magic words we learnt in POE. It so simple but yet very very powerful.

I had personaly used it during my studies sessions these days. Especially when I was taking my examinations, this has helped me a lot to strenghten myself. I am sure that your mind is taking a very wild guess of what it could be. Here it goes:

I am pretty sure that your mind just visualised your very own personal experience whereby you said the three words to yourself and you felt more empowering. There you go!!!

You know what, there are similar useful words around in the context of People mastery. As you are reading this sentence and wondering where you can find them means that you are interested to read more. For that good reason, I am posting the link here for your reading pleasure.

Adversity or Problem; How We Embrace It

Adversity is defined as "difficulties; troubles; misfortune;" in the Oxford dicky. Problem is defined as "a thing that is diffcult to deal with or understand".

"For every problem or adversity, there in it lies an opportunity ..", this you what you would've heard many times over. Adam Khoo says it, my wife says it and so do many others. It is your mindset that is the key. It is how you embrace it. An example which has been repeated a zillion times, the glass is half full or half empty whichever way you WANT to see it.

So if your mindset is one which defines problem literally and embrace it as such (a pessimist), lots of limiting self-beliefs will tend to set in. Conversely, if you are an optimist and embrace every adversity or problem as an opportunity, then you're likely to overcome it.

On the same note, I was pretty amused when I heard over the radio on how advertisers (those on 30 second commercials on the telly) overcome a new adversity. Along the way, I learned a new word called "Product Placement". You can read all about it in one of my blogs http:menafter40.blogspot.com

The First Five Minutes

The first 5 mins occurring between people sets the tone for everything that's to follow.

You would've heard about giving first impressions be it for a public speaker to convince his audience that he really does have something worthwhile to say or for the consultant attempting to clinch a particular project where the very first few moments is very critical to win over your client ... Coming back to the public speaker, if he hopes to use humour during his speech, he'd better say something funny very quickly or his audience won't believe he can make them laugh. The opportunity is just lost.

For the family, the first 5 mins of the morning determines how a mother will interact with her children on that day. A complaint or a snarl at the breakfast table will sour the mood and relationship for hours. Likewise, at the end of the day when the husband arrives home from work, the way he greets his wife, or he doesn't greet his wife, will influence their interaction throughout the evening. A single critcism such as "Alamak! fried rice again!" will put their relationship on the edge from there to bedtime.

Fortunately, whenever we have been apart from those we love, we always have the opportunity to "reset" the mood. A little thought and sensitivity when coming back together can produce surprising benefits. It all depends on the first 5 mins...

Example, do you know that you can write a 200 page e-book in 7 days or better still write 7 200 page ebook in 7 days. impossible? possible? Possible. Possible!

As with POE, after attending it, you will feel that you have gotten so much out of it. Out of Comfort Zone and Goal Setting

A couple of weeks before I bid au revior to some of my former colleagues, I was tapping on my network including search companies (got some views on them, another time perhaps) for leads and opportunities, I was sort of roaming around, talking and chit-chatting. Btw, there were 2 versions of me, 'before' and 'after' attending the POE course. The 'before' is a sad looking, downcast, worried, drooping shoulders type .. u got the pic .. and the 'after', one who saunters around as if he already got a new job (that's the impression and feedback I got) which of course I haven't. Before I got side-tracked, as usual, I'm gonna share this morning an incident (there were a few others) 'after' POE ....

After POE, I knew I was in my comfort zone for most of my working life. With the adversity (without a job) I'm facing, oops! (reframe) ... with an opportunity presented to me ....where I can now get out of my comfort zone and set new goals ... asking myself what I want in life... bearing in mind to stretch my goals and not to sell short ... anyway with this positive mindset, I chanced upon a 5 min conversation with a colleague along the corridor who had been slogging God knows how long in the bank. The conversation goes like this ...

BK: Hi Pete (not his real name). What if I can tell u you can set a 10 yr goal, this very minute?

Peter: You gotta be kidding.

BK: Not really. Know u always busy as a bee busy, lah. Bear with me just a minute .. one minute? and you'll know what i'm talking about ..

Peter: OK. Just a minute ..

BK: It's very simple. Just ask yourself, what do u see yourself in 10 yrs time .. are u going to be an employee all your life or are u going to work for yourself? If u're going to be an employee, are u in the right job? How much are u earning now? What position are u in? Are u happy with your job? Do u drag yourself to work? Can u pic yourself 3 yrs down the road? Still in this company? What position are u working for? An MD? How do u go about achieving it? Have u set your goals? Your strategies? Or are u just letting the day go by, past by u ... bogged down with daily routine, day-in day-out, week-in and week-out ...

Peter: Er ...er.... tell u what. I have half an hour .. let's talk.

We spent the next 45 mins in the canteen ( I could afford the time) talking about comfort zone and goal setting ...

Got to say this .. I was in the same position as Pete for as long as I can remember. Oh yes, I did set goals once in a while, but I was trapped in this rat race for so long. You gotta take control, as what I learnt in POE, otherwise, the events control you. It's as simple as that.

Good Evening!

Its the end of the first of the holiday mood week. Wonder if anyone is working hard. Strangely, though. Received 3 phone calls today on a holiday! 1) A lady selling Omega3 claiming they come from a canada distributor, 2) A Tupperware manager called asking me to be involved in tupperware sales and 3) A time share company asking me to buy more time share.

While the majority of us are either lazing at home, shopping, holidaying etc, some people are obviously at work hard and they obviously will be rewarded for their hard work but i was not quite happy to be disturbed on a holiday and i suspect most people will not be.

fortunately, i got a call from a familair voice in the morning (thanks BK) and that was a more enjoyable call then getting sales call :).

Ok, even though it holiday, work hard on your NLP... do more Cause and Effect patterns. The more you practise NLP, the more succesful you are going to be in communicating!

Have a happy holiday week and take more massive action. the more actions you take, the faster your dreams come true.

Strange Week

This is definitely a strange week for me. Considering that I am not currently employed. You see, under 'normal circumstances', I would be looking at the calendar, probably weeks or even months in advance, gleefully ... ha! ... plotting and planning. Mmmm ... a week with 2 public holidays huh? In between weekdays somemore. Sheesh. Which day should I apply leave? How to maximise the 'effect' of a good week with a quick break from the office madness .... Lots of combo, man .. Monday off? Or maybe Wednesday too? Or Friday only? Or the whole 3 days?

You may say what a load of rubbish, so trivial and what's the fuss ... what the heck ... just decide and take one day off and get on with it (life) .. Well, I have to admit, these little simple pleasures and thoughts actually made life interesting, a good distraction from the daily monotonous routine ... the thought of discussing with your partner in life simple plans of what to do ... and then sharing the plans with my 3 musketeers .... not forgetting scheming and doing the 'quick draw' against colleagues or your cover as to who had applied for leave first. With regard on where to go or what to do, we would probably do a quick getaway (with $$ permitting) .... up north to our friendly neighbour or jetting off somewhere nearby with the beaches and stuff .... what with the cheap airlines tickets. Lots of possibilities.

Well, for me. It is a strange week like I said. Maybe next time, it would be different. Don't get me wrong. I am not thinking of the past or of negative thoughts. But this is what I was thinking of last nite and probably the first thing this very morning. So, there you have it. Gotta to go now and do the groceries for the beach picnic and BBQ planned for the day and the steamboat on Thursday ... for now, Happy Deepavali folks!

Btw, for those who follows the EPL ... I was really disgusted with my team's performance last Sunday morning ... what a load of rubbish you say, thrashed 4-1 away at Boro!!! Maybe I should switch to Wigan ...

Comfort Zone and The Adversity Principle

Hey, I was talking about comfort zone yesterday before having to abruptly sign off. And I was saying about being thrown into unemployment in my early forties, an adversity you may say. This very morning, I chanced upon an article titled "The Adversity Principle". And my head goes ping! You see, it was talking what I was talking about ... the article says that in the world of nature, this phoenomenon known as the "Adversity Principle" which means that difficulties and hard times can actually be more beneficial to plants and animals than continual easy living. As strange as it seems, habitual well-being can be disadvantageous to a species ... ping! ... aha! doesn't it sound familiar. Comfort zone. That's what I was talking about. An example was further given. It said, think about a big male lion lying in a cage at the zoo. All his needs are met, and his hunting skills are useless. His muscles becomes flab as he yawns his way through the day (definitely could relate to this one ..). Meanwhile, the African lion roaming free on the plains, stalking and competing for his next meal, remains fit and strong by the challenges and dangers he faces, where the necessity to adapt and struggle, if it doesn't result in death and extinction, tends to produce a tougher species with a better hold on life.

Mmmm ... Could it also be that adversity is beneficial to us homo sapiens, as well? I would rather think so. When adversity plonks right down in your face, we may complain and squirm and our first response to trouble is to say, "Why me?" as though great injustice had befallen us. We may sit there and continue to bitch about it and tell everyone and your victim story. Or should we say, "hey, wait a minute .." "Let's take stock and not waste time in brooding over what might've been and start taking some action." Like what we've learnt in POE, Event plus Response equals Outcome. The response we seek here is positive response.

In my current adversity ... where after all this years, having a somewhat smooth career of my life, I was suddenly thrown into unemployment at this age where one should be thinking about planning for retirement strategy and taking the appropriate actions to achieve it. Everytime I move on (to a new job), it is a given that I should secure a new job before I quit the old one. Well, I am kinda in this unfamiliar situation where I had to quit without having a new one at hand. Emotionally, it can be quite an unhappy, anxious and somewhat unpleasant experience. It was downhill all the way, for a long long while ... where my self esteem and confidence plunged southwards to new record lows. Man, it sucks! Frustrations set in. Emotions built up. Pensive, worried ... you name it, I experienced it. Having 3 lovely boys (who haven't a clue what daddy is going thru adds to the heartaches, and a lovely wife who told me she married me for stability also made me feel damn lousy :(...sigh ...). Well, you need a good break sometimes and since attending the POE (thanks to my missus who signed me on without me knowing), it had been a real dramatic turnaround for me, emotionally. I told myself I need to change, I MUST change. and then .... overnight ... in twist of fate, I got hold of my inner self ... I took control ... and then my outlook is different, my mindset is different ... and like what they always say, the rest is history. The wonderful experience I had during POE was, how should I say ... priceless! The bonus to this wonderful experience is the new 'family' I gained, a bunch of wonderful folks who named themselves after some kinda of insects (dragonflies)...

Well, my adversity is not over yet ... er .. still looking for a job. Should I be looking for one? Or should I be getting myself out of this comfort zone? And explore the many possibilities of doing something different ... something passionate ... something where I can achieve financial freedom and not work for someone else. Passive income, multiple streams of income, internet marketing, .. opportunities are out there. Well, the next job may come soon, I dun know and I may get sucked into the comfort zone again .. I really dun know ...

Clearly what I lack now is a clear set of goals. Hey, I know that and you know that ... well, it is easier said than done. Well, this is where the ultimate success formula sets in .. values, goals and strategies before we take the right actions .... well, goal setting is what I need ....yelp, that's what I need and must do ... signing off ...

"Comfort Zone"

After 19 long years and six different organisations, from government-affiliated setup to family-run stockbroking outfit. From a local bank to MNCs, from forensic accounting to operational risk management, I've done it all. I was happy. I was capable. Am I? I suddenly found myself in an unfamiliar position .... in unfamiliar terriority. Uneasiness. Uncertainty. Unemployed. Possibly frightened of the future.

I am out of my comfort zone. What seemed as taken for granted all these years ... I had it smooth sailing. A career. A job. I am invincible. I was invincible. I could do no wrong. Corporate ladder I climbed. No sweat. With my PR skills, my smooth talking ability, my knowledge. Give me new challenges, I cherished it. I proved I could do it. I had the 'eye of the tiger' they said. I used to see the big pic, rubbed shoulders with Senior Management, the bosses. But that was the past.

What went wrong? I had more time to think these days.

Probably lost my 'fire in my bellies'. You see, I am a very easy contented person. No frills. Simple life, simple pleasures. A bore you might say. My focus is on my family, loved kids. Got three of them, all boys. What went wrong? I don't know how to describe it. Maybe, my mind was already retiring ... but practically, I wasn't ready, financially or otherwise. I got bills to pay, mortagage to settle ... that's another story ... I had simply gotten lazy. I was not ahead of the game. I need the kick-in-butt sometimes to get moving. I ..... Hey, what I am doing? I shouldn't be talking about the past. Not with 'if I have done this' and 'if I have done that'. STOP. Period.

The future. What's next? Focus on the future. Think positive. Things happened for a reason. It is not the end of the world ... This is an opportunity. Get out of your comfort zone (ha! comfort zone no more lah). Think of what you've achieved for the past. What are you going to achieve for the next 10 years, 15 years? What's in there for you ... What is your goal(s) .. think and plan your next move ... have the right mindset. That's important.
